Kansas City, Kan. police captain killed in line of duty

Update-- 4:15 p.m.: Kansas City, Kan. Police Chief Terry Zeigler identified the officer killed in the Monday afternoon shooting as Captain Robert "Dave" Melton. Ziegler says Melton was fatally shot following a response to a drive-by shooting and ensuing chase. Kansas City CBS affiliate KCTV-5 says Melton was shot a little before 2 p.m.
Dr. James Howard, a trauma surgeon at the University of Kansas Medical Center says the hospital received notification of the officer-involved shooting at about 2:15 p.m. Melton arrived at about 2:22 p.m. and did not have a pulse. Howard says doctors pronounced Melton's death at 2:55 p.m.
KCTV-5 reports Melton's death comes just two months after the death of KCK police detective Brad Lancaster. Lancaster was shot and killed May 9 near the Kansas Speedway.
Kansas City, Kan. Mayor Mark Holland acknowledged the grief already felt in the department and encouraged people not to jump to conclusions. He says people need to be in prayer for Melton's family and the KC, Kan. Police Department, as well as other departments and communities across the country.
Holland says more information will be available at the next media briefing scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

A police officer in Kansas City has been shot. According to a tweet from Kansas City Police Chief Terry Zeigler the incident happened at 22nd and Haskell.
Kansas City CBS affiliate KCTV-5 reports multiple suspects are in custody.
The officer is in critical condition according to KCTV-5, which cited a police spokesperson.Citing a witness, the station says three or four people in a car were shooting in the officer's direction and that the officer was shot while trying to apprehend a suspect.
The original call came in as an armed disturbance, reported a little after 1:30 p.m.
